A Beginner’s Guide to the 5,000-Year-Old Science of Natural Healing

The core philosophy of Ayurvedic medicine is based on the understanding that health results from the balance of the body, mind, and environment. Ayurvedic medicine is based on the understanding that the human body is composed of five basic elements of nature. They are:

  • Earth
  • Water
  • Fire
  • Air
  • Ether (space)

The combination of these elements in the human body results in biological energies that control the functions of the mind and the body. Imbalance in the energies results in disease, while the balanced energies ensure proper functioning of the body. Ayurvedic medicine places a lot of emphasis on preventive medicine.

  1. The Three Doshas

One of the most significant concepts in Ayurvedic medicine is the idea of the three doshas. The doshas are the primary energies present in the body. The doshas are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

Vata is composed of the elements air and space and is responsible for movement in the body. Vata is responsible for breathing, circulation, and nervous impulses. People with Vata-type personalities are often highly energetic and creative.

Pitta is composed of the elements fire and water and is responsible for digestion, metabolism, and temperature. People with Pitta-type personalities are often highly focused and ambitious.

Kapha is composed of the elements earth and water and is responsible for structure and stability in the body. Kapha-type personalities are often highly calm and compassionate.

Each person has their own unique blend of the doshas and is treated according to their unique dosha constitution.

  1. How Ayurveda Diagnoses Health

While in most forms of medicine, the main diagnostic tool is laboratory tests, in the case of Ayurvedic medicine, the approach is more holistic and includes the state of physical and mental well-being of the individual.

While the pulse, tongue, eyes, skin, and body structure of the individual are examined in the case of Ayurvedic medicine, the lifestyle and emotional state of the individual are also taken into account. Thus, the dosha balance of the individual and the exact cause of the imbalance can be understood by the practitioner of Ayurvedic medicine.

Ayurveda is well known for its therapeutic treatments that help in detoxifying the body and rejuvenating the mind. One of the most popular Ayurvedic therapies is Panchakarma, which is a cleansing therapy that detoxifies the body.
